corpse reviver no. 2

ORIGINATED: 1930

TYPE: Sour

METHOD: Shaken

GLASSWARE: Coupe glass

GARNISH: Lemon twist

The Corpse Reviver category of cocktails can be traced back to the 1870s, but it wasn’t until Harry Craddock’s 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book that the No. 2 received a mention. Corpse Revivers were a category of cocktails known for their apparent ability to relieve a hangover. No. 1 and No. 2 are the longstanding creations of the category, although the Corpse Reviver No. 2 is a clear favourite for the majority of people.

The recipe originally called for Kina Lillet, which has long been unavailable, so two recommended substitutes are Cocchi Americano or Lillet Blanc.

¾ oz (22.5ml) London dry gin

¾ oz (22.5ml) Cointreau

¾ oz (22.5ml) Lillet Blanc

¾ oz (22.5ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 dash of absinthe, to rinse glass

1 In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients except absinthe.

2 Add ice and shake for 10 to 12 seconds.

3 Rinse a chilled coupe glass with absinthe.

4 Double strain into the prepared glass and garnish with a lemon twist, if desired.

Stick with the Corpse Reviver No. 2—it’s by far the best of the Corpse Reviver iterations.
